Deep Dive: What is a Cubic Foot (CFT)?

A cubic foot is a unit of volume in the imperial and US customary systems of measurement. It represents the volume of a cube with sides that are exactly one foot (12 inches or 0.3048 meters) in length.

Logistics companies and courier agencies heavily rely on CFT calculations to price shipping fees. For domestic air cargo and freight, companies define rates using volumetric parameters. If your package has a high CFT volume but low weight, shipping carriers will charge you according to the volume it takes up in the truck or aircraft cargo hold.

How to Compute CFT Manually

The standard manual calculation process for CFT is:

  1. Measure the length, width, and height of the box in the same units.
  2. If dimensions are in inches, multiply the values (L × W × H) and divide the final sum by 1,728 (since there are 1,728 cubic inches in one cubic foot).
  3. If dimensions are in centimeters, multiply the values and divide the result by 28,316.85.
  4. If dimensions are in meters, multiply them to get CBM, then multiply by 35.3147.
