Deep Dive: What is a Cubic Meter (CBM)?

A cubic meter is a metric unit of volume equal to a cube measuring one meter on each side. It is the international standard unit for freight volume calculations, used in air, land, and sea shipping.

When shipping via sea freight, carriers charge ocean rates based on the volume of cargo in CBM. Less than Container Load (LCL) shipments are priced specifically by CBM, which determines how much space your crates take up relative to the entire container size.

How to Compute CBM Manually

The standard manual calculation process for CBM is:

  1. Measure length, width, and height in centimeters or meters.
  2. If dimensions are in centimeters, multiply the values (L × W × H) and divide by 1,000,000 to convert cubic centimeters into cubic meters.
  3. If dimensions are in inches, multiply the values and multiply by 0.000016387.
  4. If dimensions are in feet, multiply the values and multiply by 0.0283168.
